RE: Residential Trash Service for the City of Aurora
The City of Aurora began the process of implementing mandatory Residential Trash Service through the City of Aurora about two years ago. This notification is to provide an update to Citizens about that process and where the City is with beginning this valuable service to the Citizens of Aurora. A requirement of this process according to State Statutes was to give proper notification to any trash hauling vendors that were operating within the City of Aurora at that time, that the City had plans to establish trash collection services within the City of Aurora. That was completed in 2020.
The next step in the process was to solicit bids from interested contractors. This step was completed last fall, and bids were received from 3 vendors. This formalized bidding process was open to the public and the bids were reviewed by the City Manager and a recommendation for awarding the bid was put together by the City Manager that compared all submitted bids against one another. Incomplete/deficient bids were removed from consideration if applicable. All submitted bids were thoroughly reviewed by the City Council along with the recommendation from the City Manager. After reviewing the bids, the Council awarded the bid to Doty Services who met all the bid requirements and had the lowest bid for this service. The bids included basic weekly collection for residential customers and also a provision for the pickup of one bulky item per month for each residential customer. Bulky items include old furniture, freon free appliances, or other large items that can be accepted at a landfill or transfer station.
Since that component was completed in December, City staff and Doty Services have been working together to work out the details of starting this service to the community. While we have been working toward a target date of beginning service March 1, 2023, we have determined that the citizens and the community would be better served if that date was moved to July 1, 2023.
This change of date allows City Staff and Doty more time to work out any unforeseen issues with service routes and bill. But more importantly, City Staff will be taking this extra time to provide detailed information to the citizens about the trash service, and answer as many questions as we can to make sure the residents are fully informed on this new service that the City will be offering.
Lastly, the big question that everyone has is “How Much?” By utilizing a competitive bid process we will be able to get a lower collective price for the community as a whole. We expect the final monthly amount to not exceed $15.00 per month, per residential customer/residential service location. The final amount will be determined by the City Council in the coming weeks. We will be sharing that information as soon as it is finalized.
The City is committed to providing excellent service to our community and we want to have a smooth rollout of this service. The City Council and City Staff are excited that this big goal is going to be accomplished and are confident that it will have a positive impact on the cleanliness or attractiveness of our community for years to come.
